Are you fond of just closing your browser than closing your account first before shutting it off? You will hate me after reading this blog because you are certainly doing the wrong thing. Do you know that every bit of your activities lies on your metadata? Everything you do is right on the browser history and if you will keep leave your account open on the browser, it is an open invitation for backdoor intruders.
Recently there were reports in the Philippines that bank accounts were emptied in a different location and one of those incidents happened on my good friend Allan. He was just checking on his balance on a company computer. He was so glad that his bonus is finally reflected on his account however on the next day upon withdrawing the money we was stunned to know that his money is gone, and his bank account went zero. He dont have any clue of how it happened and he came to me for help. We traced all the possible ways of where he could have spent or send or whatever – and he pointed out the last access he had to his account was through a computer in their office.
What? a company property? how did it happened? We contacted the IT department and hope they can give a clue, if the computer is infected with worms or browser injection. And we were bit surprise to know that yes it was been hacked not only once but several times. A worm that is giving a ping to server with a rotating ip address or some sort. And I guess what been stucked on the browser history is a room for the worm to dig and unluckily his account were not signed out though the session end.
Then we were informed that the money was withdrawn in Manila while the bank acount holder is residing down south. I took him months to recover the funds and alot of investigation happened. One lesson that Allan learned is that he could have protected his browser activity, do some prep and cleaning before and after using a public computer. Currently he does not check his account online anymore, he keep all transactions in his iphone.
If Allan is a big example of your everyday mistake, you are not then excuse for a possible victim soon.
